Word Web Pro

This is the software dictionary we spoke about at Today's session. It sells for eighteen dollars.

WordWeb Pro is a quick and powerful English thesaurus and dictionary for Windows. It can be used to lookup words from almost any Windows program, showing definitions, synonyms and related words. You can search for words matching a pattern, find and solve anagrams, and optionally search a large number of extra word lists.

Unlike any paper dictionary or thesaurus WordWeb is truly a Word Web - each set of synonyms is linked to other related sets. Lookup "tree", click on the "Types" tab and you'll have a list of different types of tree. Click on "Part of" and WordWeb will tell you that a tree can be part of a "forest" or "wood".

Enter a pattern as the search word and it will find words that match, e.g. T???SH finds thrash, thresh and thrush *GRY finds angry, hungry and unangry ?*Q*P finds acquaintanceship, equip, liquid soap, re-equip, and square up Use * to stand for any number of letters, and ? for one unknown letter. You can also do powerful advanced searches for vowel/consonant patterns, punctuation specific word forms, and groups of letters. You can also search sets of additional word lists (see the ordering page for details), including place names, specialized word lists and other languages.

Enter a word and you can find all straight and multiple word anagrams, e.g. protest finds potters, spotter, to strep, pert sot, etc. begin finds being, binge, in beg, and gin be WordWeb Pro finds powder brow + many others. You can also find partial anagrams. How many words can you make using the letters in "constitutional"? WordWeb Pro's answer: 726!
