Using The Nod32 Anti-Virus Program With Screen Readers

We have determined that the Nod32 Anti-Virus program works well and is usable with screen readers.

Installation

Installing the Nod32 screen reader is quite simple. The company has done a good job of selecting the defaults. These will work well with almost all computers. Simply follow the prompts and you should be all set.

Updates

By default Nod 32 is set to check for updates once per hour. When it finds them they're automatically installed. You will be notified when this happens. However although both Window Eyes and Jaws will read this, it only takes a few seconds before it disappears. Unless you happen to be in the area you won't hear it. It is possible to check, using the Control Center, to determine the last time it was run. You can also make sure it's updating by watching the last two digits of the version of definitions available in the System Tray or in the scanned message at the bottom of your incoming e-mail.

Running a scan

Once the program is installed, look for it in Start Menu and Programs. You'll find it listed as ESET. You'll find several listings. The first two are Nod32 and Nod32 Control Center. Open the Nod 32 choice as this is the scan window. To run a scan simply shift tab to the Scan and Clean choice and press Enter. The default choices work well if you're concerned about what to scan. They can however, be easily modified. Nod 32 scans quickly when compared to other anti-virrus programs.

The program will notify you with a sound when it has finished. Tab to the log to receive your report. There will be a fairly lengthy list of files that it was not able to open. This is because these were in use and this is normal. Near the bottom of the list you'll be notified about any problems found and how long the scan took Simply follow the prompts to correct a problem.

The Control Center,

When you open the Control Center you'll find yourself in a tree view. Using the arrow keys select the item you are interested in and tap the space bar to make sure it's selected. Next Do a Control Tab. This seems to work best when no other windows are open. This will place you in a Properties window. Here, depending on the choice you made you'll find a group of Combo and Checkboxes that will allow you to make your changes in the settings.

Scheduling a Scan

In the Control Center Tree View locate the Nod System32 Tools choice. Right arrow to open it and select the schedule choice. Next do a Control Tab. This will place you on a Combo Box. Here you will be able to see what has all ready been scheduled and find out when it was last run. This includes checking to see when the updates were last checked for.

Now Tab to Add and press enter. This will place you in a combo Box that allows you to choose what task you wish to schedule. From here on the prompts are self explanatory. You'll find a combination of Radial buttons and check boxes. You will be asked to provide a name for the task you are scheduling. When you've finished simply do an Alt F4 to close out.
