Since we know people usually do not want to read manuals, we decided to make this one different. The language used is simpler, and the manual is filled with bits of humor. If you read the manual from start to finish, you will notice that, with each step, you learn more than just that step, but a bit more. We hope you will enjoy this approach.
TapMemo is all about voice, and how the power of voice, your voice, can help you do more. TapMemo can recognize your voice, record it, and play it back. TapMemo also has its own voice, which speaks back to you. All you have to do is press one button, and you are on your way. Oh, there are two buttons for volume, as well. Sorry!
Memo Pad -Any thought you have, or any idea, task, or a good story you wish to remember can easily be recorded. Just name your memo and record it. Then, later, just say that name; and TapMemo will play that memo back whenever you want.
•Phone Book -Store all your contacts (not all of them really, just your important ones) in your TapMemo unit. To each of them, if you want, you can add some more information like an address, etc. At any given moment, TapMemo will be glad to look up a name for you, tell you that person’s phone number, and, yes, even dial that number for you on your phone!
•Calendar -Got an important meeting, or better still, got a not-so- important-meeting you know you will forget? -Load them all in! TapMemo will gently remind you of your obligations when the time is right.
•Alarm Clock -TapMemo includes a progressive wake-up mechanism that will gracefully wake you up with a gradual volume increase.
•Lock -Protecting all of your personal information stored inside your TapMemo unit is easy. Just say the locking command, and you are protected. Unlocking the unit is done with a short pin code.
•Unit Locator -Forgot where you left your TapMemo? Have no fear. Whistling will activate the unit and cause it to say, at a high volume, a short phrase that will help you locate it. Still did not find it? Whistle again!
• Talking Clock -Date and Time telling is as easy as can be.Whenever you hear the "go" sound, it means that TapMemo is waiting for your voice command. Whenever you hear the "no go" sound, it means TapMemo is going back to bed and is not currently listening to any voice command.
Whenever you hear the "go" sound, but you do not know what are your options, simply ask "what can I say?" and TapMemo will gladly tell you the list of voice commands it is currently expecting from you. During this time, you can press the TapKey in order to stop the reading and have TapMemo listen to your command.
TapMemo has two volume buttons, minus and plus, marked -and + respectively. These buttons can be used to decrease/increase the overall volume of the unit at any given moment. If you press one of them while TapMemo is sleeping, TapMemo will wakeup, change the volume level, and announce the change by saying "down" for the minus button or "up" for the plus button. If you keep pressing the volume buttons until you reach the lower or upper limit of volume, then TapMemo will issue the “no go" sound and no further change in the volume will occur.
If you press one of these buttons while TapMemo is busy doing something else, like playing back a memo, the volume level will change, but no verbal response will be given.
Under the “entries playback” function of the phone book, memo pad and calendar, the two volume buttons become “previous” and “next” buttons, enabling you to scroll up and down among the entries. No change in the volume level will occur while in these functions.
Background Noise -While using TapMemo, try to keep the background noise as low as possible, especially when adding a new name, memo or appointment. Trying to add a new entry while other people are loudly talking in the same room will result in failure or simply a bad entry that TapMemo will later have difficulty recognizing
•Speak Clearly -It is important that you speak clearly and as naturally as possible when commanding TapMemo or when adding a new entry. Try not to talk too soft or too loud.
•Differentiate Entries -Try and add new entries that sound different from the ones you have already added. Similar entries will be rejected by TapMemo. This applies only to entries in the same set so for example, you can give the exact same name to one memo and one appointment, but you must differentiate between two memo names.
Plugging an earphone into TapMemo will cause the internal speaker to be muted, enabling you to maintain a certain amount of privacy. Another advantage of using an earphone is that you save a lot of power since the speaker is the most powerconsuming part of TapMemo. We estimate that using an earphone will triple the working time of TapMemo between charge cycles.
Now that you know WHAT can be done, let's describe HOW it can be done. The first thing we recommend is that you set the clock. Are you ready? Here we go.
Press the TapKey button. TapMemo will wake up from its beauty sleep and emit a short tone. Say "system setup". TapMemo, being a good friend, will repeat your command. You are now in the setup menu. Another short tone is heard.
Say "set clock" and follow the verbal instructions to set up the current date and time. Note that the hour setting is based on a 24 hour clock. As any other well educated device, TapMemo will thank you when you are done and read back the current date and time.
Now that the clock is ticking, explore other commands under the setup menu. Begin with battery power.
Access the “system setup” menu. Don't remember how? Here is the abstract: Press the TapKey button. After the tone, say "system setup" and you are there! Then say "battery level" and TapMemo will respond. Here is a nice table with all possible responses and the actions you should take:
TapMemo says…: Battery is 100% fullImportant! Each time you press the TapKey button, TapMemo measures the battery level. A low level battery will still enable you to continue, just with a "battery is low" warning. If the battery level is critically low, TapMemo will warn you and then go back to sleep. This would be a good time to charge your tired friend.
For charging instructions and general battery maintenance, look for the "Charging your TapMemo" chapter close to the end of this manual. Now that you know how to get a report on battery level, it is time to learn how to get a report on remaining memory.
Access the “system setup” menu. Don't remember how? Just press the TapKey. After the tone, say "system setup" and you are there! Now say "memory status" and TapMemo will complain about how much memory is taken already. You should know that all applications on your TapMemo unit share a common memory, so if, for example, you have recorded many long memos, you may not be able to store many appointments in the calendar or many names in the phonebook. Since we do care about you, we thought of the following ideas to help you free memory space:
•Erase memos that you have recorded but do not remember why. Memos take up the most memory, so each one you erase will be a small victory for you.
• Erase names of friends and family members who you do not like any more.As for appointments, TapMemo will erase them for you 24 hours after they have passed. Isn't that nice? Speaking of nice things, TapMemo can help you locate itself in case you forgot where you left it. Here is how that is done:
Access the “system setup” menu. Don't remember how? Just press the TapKey. After the tone, say "system setup" and you are there! Now say "unit locator" and TapMemo will ask you if you want to turn the unit locator on. We think you do, so please say "yes". Once turned on, TapMemo will wait for you to whistle, yes, you heard right, whistle. Each time it detects a whistle, it will wakeup and announce "TapMemo, unit locator" in the loudest voice it can, as if to say: Here I am!
If you want to turn this function off, just access the “unit locator” function as before, and TapMemo will ask you if you want to turn the unit locator off. "Yes" is the correct answer.
Intermission: How are you doing so far?OK. There are two more items under the “system setup” menu. The first one helps you get up on time in the morning, or at least tries to. You guessed right, it’s the “alarm clock”
Access the “system setup” menu. Don't remember how? Just press the TapKey. After the tone, say "system setup" and you are there!
Say "set wake up time" and follow the verbal instructions to set the alarm clock to your desired (or mandatory) wake up time. Note that the alarm clock is a daily alarm clock so it will go off once every 24 hours unless you decide to turn it off using the "wake up" command on the main menu. Don't worry, you can learn how to do that later.
When the desired wake up time is reached, TapMemo will gently try to wake you by playing a short melody and by saying the time. This will continue for one minute with an increasing volume unless you press the TapKey button and go back to bed.
Last but not least TapMemo offers a function that keeps all of your personal information safe: the “lock” function.
The lock mechanism has three functions:
a. Setting the unlocking code
b. Locking your unit
c. Unlocking your unit
First, learn how to set your unlocking code (which you will use to unlock the unit). The two other functions will be described later.
TapMemo arrives with a default unlocking code which is 555. How original. To set your own personal unlocking code, do the following: Access the “system setup” menu. Don't remember how? Just press the TapKey. After the tone, say "system setup" and you are there!
Say "unlocking code" and follow the verbal instructions to set your three-digit code. We strongly recommend that you write your code down somewhere in case you forget it, and your unit is locked.
Congratulations! You have now covered all functions in the “system setup” menu. It is time to move on and to begin actually using the unit. Here we go.
Very easy. Press the TapKey button. TapMemo will wake up and emit a short tone. Say "tell time", and TapMemo will say the current time. If you did not set the clock yet, TapMemo will ask you to do that.
Much the same. Press the TapKey button. TapMemo will wake up and emit a short tone. Say "what is the date", and TapMemo will give you the current date. If you did not set the clock yet, TapMemo will ask you to do that.
Once you have set your wakeup time, you can very easily turn your alarm On or Off. To turn your alarm On and Off, do the following: Press the TapKey button. TapMemo will wake up and emit a short tone. Say "wake up mode" and follow the verbal instructions to turn your alarm clock On or Off.
Remember that you learned how to set your unlocking code earlier? Here's the second & third part where you learn how to lock and unlock your TapMemo.
To lock your TapMemo, press the TapKey button. TapMemo will wake up and emit a short tone. Say "lock unit" and TapMemo will ask you to confirm your intention. If you are serious, say "yes" and TapMemo will lock the unit while reminding you of your code. If you did not set your code yet, TapMemo will use the default 555 code. Once locked, the unit will not respond when pressing the Volume Up/Down buttons. From now on, your unit is locked, and all of your personal information is safe.
To unlock your TapMemo, press the TapKey button. TapMemo will wakeup and ask you for the unlock code. Say your three-digit unlock code, digit by digit. If you said the correct code, TapMemo will unlock the unit. If you do not, try again since there is no limit to the number of attempts permitted.
TapMemo's phone book can hold up to 60 names. Each name can be associated with a single phone number and a single, optional, 7 seconds long recording with whatever information you wish, such as the person's address, etc.
To add a new name to the phone book, do the following: Press the TapKey
button. TapMemo will wake up and emit a short tone. Say "phone book".
TapMemo will repeat your command. You are now in the phone book menu. When
another short tone is heard, say "add new". TapMemo will ask you for the name
to add and will then ask you to repeat it. Then, TapMemo will ask you for the
phone number itself. Say the phone number, digit by digit.
While entering a phone number, TapMemo will repeat each digit you say.
If you hear that it recognized a wrong digit, press the volume up or
down button to delete that wrong digit and enter it again.
When you are done, say nothing or press the TapKey. TapMemo will read back the number and will ask you to confirm it. Now, you can add a short message with the address or any
other information you wish. If you do not wish to record any data, or to stop
recording, press the TapKey. TapMemo will thank you and store the name,
number and recording. Now, Another name adding cycle will start automatically.
If you do not wish to add another name, press the TapKey after the prompt
"please say a name to add" is heard.
Access the “phone book” menu. Don't remember how? Just press the TapKey. After the tone, say "phone book" and you are there!
Say "search", and, at the prompt, say the name you wish to find. If found, TapMemo will play it back, play the additional message that you have recorded, and then tell you the phone number. TapMemo will then ask you if you wish it to dial the number for you. If you do, say "yes" when asked, then hold TapMemo approximately 2" from your telephone mouthpiece. TapMemo will count down 3 seconds and will emit the special tones (called DMTF tones) required to dial that number.
Access the “phone book” menu. Don't remember how? Just press the TapKey. After the tone, say "phone book" and you are there!
Say "delete", and, at the prompt, say the name you wish to delete. If found, TapMemo will playback that name and ask you for confirmation before deleting the name. Once deleted, a name cannot be restored.
Reach the phone book menu. Don't remember how? Just press the TapKey. After the tone, say "phone book" and you are there!
Say "clear all entries". TapMemo will ask you for confirmation before deleting all the names. Once deleted, the names cannot be restored, so please exercise caution with this function!

TapMemo's calendar can hold up to 30 appointments. Each appointment is associated with a single recording that can contain the appointment location, participants, etc. You will need to set the date & time of the appointment and also an optional reminder. Once an appointment reminder, with date and time, is reached, TapMemo will play back the appointment name and will then tell you when the appointment will occur. Once an appointment date and time are reached, TapMemo will play back the appointment's name and additional data (if such data was recorded). 24 hours after an appointment's date and time pass, it will be automatically deleted to free memory space.
To add a new appointment to the calendar, do the following: Press the TapKey button. TapMemo will wake up and emit a short tone. Say "calendar". TapMemo will repeat your command. You are now in the calendar menu. When another short tone is heard, say "add new". TapMemo will ask you for the appointment name to add and will then ask you to repeat it. Then, TapMemo will ask you to record your appointment data. If you wish to stop recording, press the TapKey. TapMemo will now ask you to set the date and time for this appointment. Follow the verbal instructions, and use the TapKey button to set the desired date and time. Last but not least, TapMemo will ask you to set the reminder time. This is the time before the actual appointment occurs, when TapMemo will remind you of the upcoming appointment. You can set it to "Off" if you do not need a reminder.

To stop the appointments playback, press the TapKey.
“Battery life” means the time your TapMemo will run before it must be recharged (sometimes this is also called “play time” or “run time”). “Battery lifespan” means the total amount of time your battery will last before it must be replaced.
Since TapMemo's battery is lithium-ion based, it has no memory effect which means you can charge it at any time, without the need to discharge it fully first. If TapMemo warns you that it has a low level battery or if you feel like charging the battery anyway, simply plug the supplied power adaptor into the wall outlet and plug the small power plug into TapMemo. As soon as you make these connections, TapMemo will say "charging battery" only once, and the charge cycle will begin. You can unplug the power plug from TapMemo at any time. A full charge takes about 4 hours. When it is fully charged, TapMemo will say "charge complete" once a minute until you disconnect the plug.
Rechargeable batteries have a limited number of charge cycles and may eventually need to be replaced. Battery life and number of charge cycles vary by use and settings. Read below for more information:
Paying attention to just a few common sense pointers will pay off with a longer battery lifespan and battery life for your TapMemo. The most important thing is to keep your TapMemo out of the sun or a hot car (even the glove compartment). Heat will degrade your battery’s performance the most. Lowering the speaker volume or better yet, using an earphone, will prolong the time needed between charges.
If you do not use TapMemo for a long time, be sure to charge it once every 2 months or so. This will keep your TapMemo's battery healthy and happy.
TapMemo Temperate Zone. Your TapMemo works best from 32°to 95°F. You should store it in environments of -4°to 113°. That’s 0°to 35°C. Keeping your TapMemo as near room temperature as possible (22°C) is ideal.
Answer: Most chances are that the battery power is very very low. When this happens, TapMemo shuts down all applications and will only wait for you to charge it. If charging the unit does not help, please contact us for Service.
Question: When working with the unit, I noticed that the volume level can not reach the levels it did when the battery was fully charged. Is that Normal?Answer: Yes. TapMemo has a built in mechanism that will reduce the maximum volume level allowed when it noticed that the battery is running low. This is done in order to prolong the battery life and protect it from large amounts of current draws needed by the speaker. Simply charge the unit.
Question: I accidentally pressed the TapKey button for more then a second and TapMemo got into the memo adding command. What is going on?Answer: Here you have two options: The first is to send the unit for service. We will unlock it for you and send it back. The second option is for you to perform a hard reset which will unlock the unit but will also clear the entire memory (phone book, memo pad and calendar) and will set the unit back to the factory setting.
To hard reset your unit do the following: Press and hold the TapKey. While holding, insert a pin or a metal clip to the reset aperture at the back of the unit and press shortly. Release the TapKey. TapMemo will state its code version. The unit is now unlocked.
Question: I have trained around 30 names into my phone book, and TapMemo now says "phone book is full" when trying to train the next name. I thought the phone book can contain 60 names. What is going on?
Answer: Your TapMemo memory is full. You should clear some memory space by deleting a few memos you do not need any more.
This chapter contains important safety and handling information for TapMemo. Read all safety information below and operating instructions before using TapMemo to avoid injury. Keep this users manual for your TapMemo handy for future reference.
Do not use TapMemo in rain or near wash basins, or other wet locations. Take care not to spill any food or liquid into TapMemo. In case TapMemo gets wet, unplug all cables before cleaning, and allow it to dry thoroughly before using it again.
Never attempt to repair TapMemo yourself. TapMemo does not contain any user-
serviceable parts. For service information, go to

The battery in TapMemo is not user-replaceable.
Permanent hearing loss may occur if earphones are used at high volume. Set the volume to a safe level. You can adapt over time to a higher volume of sound that may sound normal but can be damaging to your hearing. If you experience ringing in your ears or muffled speech, stop listening and have your hearing checked. The louder the volume, the less time is required before your hearing could be affected. Hearing experts suggest that to protect your hearing: Limit the amount of time you use earphones or headphones at high volume.
• Avoid turning up the volume to block out noisy surroundings.Use of headphones while operating a vehicle is not recommended and is illegal in some areas. Be careful and attentive while driving. Stop using TapMemo if you find it disruptive or distracting while performing any activity that requires your full attention.
Never force a connector into a port. Check for obstructions on the port. If the connector and port don’t join with reasonable ease, they probably don’t match. Make sure that the connector matches the port and that you have positioned the connector correctly in relation to the port.
Operate TapMemo in a place where the temperature is always between 0° and 35° C (32° to 95° F). Store TapMemo in a place where the temperature is always between -20° and 45° C (-4° to 113° F). Don’t leave TapMemo in your car, because temperatures in parked cars can exceed this range.
To clean TapMemo, use a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth. Avoid getting moisture in openings. Don’t use window cleaners, household cleaners, aerosol sprays, solvents, alcohol, ammonia, or abrasives to clean TapMemo.
