Cooking Utensils Recommended by The There's A K in Kitchen Event
These utensils are recommended by Gourmet Chick the hostess of the There's a K in Kitchen cooking event. They can greatly simplify the cooking process.

Tools & Appliances for the blind
Micro planer
This tool works as a very fine grater.
Can be purchased at most kitchen stores. About $15
Large tray heavy gauge aluminum size: 16 by 24 inches.
This provides an excellent work surface and makes cleaning up spills a snap.
Can be purchased at most restaurant supply stores for about $30
Rice cooker
No fail method of cooking rice and steaming vegetables.
I recommend no smaller than the 8 cup even for 2 people. Rival is a good brand and costs about $20 at K mart. This was the best price that I could find.
Mandolin
Great for slicing, shredding, etc.
Cost is from $15 to $75 depending on the material it is made from. Mine is plastic and I paid about $15 about 10 years ago and it is still working fine. Can be purchased from most kitchen stores and the cookware department at many department stores.
Collapsible measuring cups
Size of cups embossed on bottom of cup.
Cost about $15. Can be purchased at many kitchen stores and from the web site

Measuring cups with holes drilled
Regular plastic measuring cups which I had my husband drill holes in the handle for identification. 2 holes for ½ cup and 1 hole for 1/3 cup. No holes in the 1 cup or ¼ cup because the measurement is obvious by the size.

Double spatula

Makes turning meats over an easy task.
Long mitts or oven glove
The long mitt reduces the chance of burning your arm and the oven glove has fingers for easier handling of hot items.
Can be purchased all over in such stores as K mart Wal mart etc. oven glove is about $15.

Child syringe with tip
Use to measure up to 2 teaspoons of liquid by cutting a mark in plunger for amounts one-fourth teaspoon to 2 teaspoons.

Spaghetti measure stick
Use with straight spaghetti to measure one pound.

Liquid level measurer
Can be used when fillling measuring cups to avoid overflow.

Wooden Bread slicer
This is a frame which holds a loaf of bread and has slots which are used as a slicing guide. Allows you to cut perfectly even slices of brread every time.

Black and white cutting board
This is for those who are helped by the use of contrast light and dark backgrounds on which to work.

Heavy Duty Kitchen Scissors
Gourmet Chick recommends heavy duty kitchen scissors as a useful tool. They simplify
the cutting of meat, vegetables etc. into small pieces. My Good Scissors has both
