f-protect

F-Prot Antivirus for Windows currently detects more than 125635 different threats against your computer system's safety. This and the innovative heuristic detection capabilities integrated into F-Prot Antivirus for Windows provides you with a protection against all known threats and a protection against most of the unknown.

F-Prot Antivirus's protection is maintained by our Virus Experts, working around the clock to monitor for new virus outbreaks and reacting to them in the shortest time possible. The Virus Signature files are updated at least once a week and more often if new virus threats emerge demanding an update.

The components
OnDemand Scanner

The OnDemand Scanner is the main program for configuring the components of F-Prot Antivirus. Here you can scan your system for viruses, make multiple scan tasks using the Advanced mode, check the effectiveness of your current virus definition files, compare them with the latest ones and start any of the components included with F-Prot Antivirus for Windows (see below). The OnDemand Scanner in the commercial edition of F-Prot Antivirus for Windows scan Network drives as well as local drives.

Real-Time Protector

One of the central features in F-Prot Antivirus for Windows is the Real-Time Protector, which monitors all files accessed by your system and denies access to infected, suspicious or malicious files that may harm your system in any way. Real-Time Protector is always in the front line, watching files as they are downloaded, opened, copied etc.

Updater

This simple, yet vital part of F-Prot Antivirus for Windows handles the updates of your virus definition files. These files contain information about all viruses F-Prot Antivirus should detect and also contains a remedy for each one of them. It can be set to download via the Internet (with or without a proxy) or from a specified path on a local network.

Scheduler

Using the Scheduler, it is possible to set F-Prot Antivirus' OnDemand Scanner to search for viruses at a specified date and time. It is also possible to set the Updater component to update the virus definition files regularly to keep your system on alert when it comes to new viruses as they appear every day.

DOS OnDemand Scanner

F-Prot Antivirus for DOS is included in F-Prot Antivirus for Windows as there may be instances where a virus can lead to Windows becoming inoperatable. In these cases F-Prot for DOS can come in handy to disinfect the system, as long as DOS is still functional.

How to install once downloaded from
www.f-prot.com

Just run the .exe file from your download location and except the way things come up,. In fact once you've arrowed up to accept the license agreement on the second screen it's just tabbing to the next pressing the space bar , next and next again making sure you do this will then bring you to the finish button pressing the space bar on this will finish the install for you. That's it now it's installed.

What do I have now on my system?

On your desk top you'll see there's a short cut placed there for you to use, or should I say in our case that this isn't the best way of us accessing the program. The one we can use really well is placed in the programs group, the sub menus are self explanatory, they show you what's available and you just press enter on the menu item you want to run. I'll go through it in a moment. What I'd like to explain first is this, now what's happened is you now have an icon in the system tray, this is the real time protector, this should be left running all the time so it can hit any viruses that may come in via email or any programs you might down load that could have a virus in them. To access this in the system tray is easy, using jaws press the insert F11 key, arrow down until you hear F-stop-w. pressing enter on this brings up the menu to arrow down, this will say disable, or exit f-stop-w. this is the best thing to do when installing jaws, that's to exit the program then you can install a jaws key.

The program group.

Ok now to get to the virus checkers programs do this. Press windows key, now press P for programs now pressing the F key should bring up F-prot for windows sub menu. Pressing enter or right arrow will let you in to the sub menu where you can run these choices when you down arrow. The first choice is scan, this has a sub menu also and I'll explain that in a minute, but down arrow now, this will say on demand scanner, this you can enable by pressing enter on it, then you can make your choices as to when to scan, you just tab around in here and it's really quite self explanatory. This will then send another icon in to the system tray, I myself don't use this as I prefer to run these things when I am not doing anything. If your in the middle of making a sound recording and it starts up then it may make the recording work a little funny, I don't use this at all.

Down arrow,

Ok the next choice here is real time protector. This is what's running in the system tray, so if you should turn it off in the system tray to install a jaws key and you want to turn it back on, just pressing enter on this item will turn it back on and put the icon back in the system tray for you. Mostly you'll re start your computer after installing programs so this will put it back in there on boot up.

Down arrow to next item scheduler.

Ok this is where you can set f-prot to run a scheduled scan run updates and more, I myself once again don't like using these things, preferring to run them like I say manually but that's the next item in the list here.

Down arrow again.

Ok this is also self explanatory, uninstall? Yes that's what it does, just make sure when you run this to uninstall that you've turned off the f-stop-w in the system tray and then it'll work just fine.

Down arrow the updater.

This is now the updater pressing enter on this will take you in to the f-prot updater area, this is accessible with the tab key, once you've set things up in here you'll only need to hit the space bar to get the updates. This will only work also if your using a paid for version of the program. Lets now look at setting this up.
Press enter on the updater, the first tab will say update now button, pressing the space bar will then go off on the internet and find the site, and update automatically for you. When it's done it'll let you know, using the jaws curser will help here as it'll let you read the screen and you'll see when it's finished doing the updates it'll say downloading updates from server then finished updating close button, you'll have to hit the close button with your jaws curser then left mouse button to close this off, this brings you back out to this little program where you pressed the space bar in the first place, now to quit this part press alt q. this closes off the program for you.

Before we use this though we have to first tell it how we want to do this updating, So pressing the tab key will show you there are more buttons in here, so tab, this is the settings button press the space bar to open this dialog box, now to fill in the relevant details. This will open on the ok button so press the tab key, this will say remember my customer number check box, press the space bar to keep this setting all the time. Now press the tab key again, this will say edit, this is where you put in your customer number or what you'd call the registration key they send you, now tab again, this will say about using a proxy if you use one then fill in the details here then tab again, this is now the ok button, press the space bar and that part is now set.

This brings you back out of the settings button and puts you back in the updater program. Pressing the tab key now says help button tab again this says quit button, the next one is the one we're after so tab again, this is a radio button where it says LAN connection radio button 1 of 2. this is for if you have a copy some where else on your other computers on the network where you'd like to do the updates from. If you don't have another one then down arrow to the second choice to update on line, this will then use the internet to do the updates from. Now tab again and this is the update now button pressing this button with your space bar will go out to the server and run the updates for you, we've done that a little earlier on in this document.

Setting up the scanner.

Now we need to really set up the scanner to run it, the best way of doing this is, press windows key, p, for programs, then f for f-protect. Press enter on the scan submenu this time and here you'll see choices of what you want to scan, for the first time press enter on hard drive, pressing enter will start the scan running so we need to stop the scan so's we can open the options up. So pressing the space bar will stop it running, it'll ask you are you sure you want to stop the scan? You press the space bar. press the alt F key to bring up the file menu, down arrow to the scanning options and press enter on it. just tab through these until you go passed the ok button, now you should hear a tab setting if you now right arrow it'll say action to take tab. Press the tab key, you need to set this first radio button on the third one so down arrow to it it'll say disinfect radio button checked, this is the one you want, press tab again now, now you've got if fails button, we want to go in here and set this up so press the space bar to enter this. This will drop you on the ok button so you have to press the tab key to go passed the cancel button and the next tab should give you some more radio buttons to make your selection so choose to delete the files radio button and press the tab key again. Tab again this will say document viruses report only leave this as it is and tab again, now tab to the ok button and your out of this but not out of the dialog box yet. So tab to the ok button again and press the space bar and your dun with the settings now, now if you want to do a scan press the alt key down arrow to scan now press enter on it. This is now running and if you really want to know how it's doing all the time just set jaws in the say all mode and it'll tell you what files it's looking at and where it's looking at them from on your computer, how ever this may be a little to verbose for some so just pressing insert 3 on the num pad will tell you how many files it's checked and how long it's taken since you last pressed the key stroke, this is a little better and that's the way I use it. If it comes across a virus it will now ask you do you want to disinfect it? Pressing the yes button will clear out the virus for you. To get out of the program after your scan has finished press alt F4.

It's a great program and I have used this all the time I have had a computer.
