The Accessible Devices Victor Reader Stream Setup and Operating Tutorial (Revised)

Victor Reader Stream, setup and operating tutorial revised
To save reading time and space, the Victor Reader Stream will be called "the Stream"

Getting Your Computer To Recognize The Stream

The first action you will need to take when setting up the Stream for the first time is to get your PC to recognize the device.

Editors note. The first time I tried to get the PC too recognize the stream through the USB port the PC didn't see the Stream at all. This will make it possible for the PC to see the Stream as a drive.

1. Power up the Stream. The power button is at the top left side of the unit. Hold the power button until it beeps. You will hear a welcome message.

2. Insert the SD card. You do this by holding the card with the cut out facing to the left and the cut out will be pointing down. When you insert the SD card in to the stream, it will create folders on the SD card automatically. If you were to connect the USB cable to communicate with the PC it would not see the Stream as a drive yet. You must turn off the Stream first. To do this, hold down the power button on the Stream until you hear a double beep. That signifies the software and firmware is unloading and is powering down.

3. Attach the USB cable to the Stream and to the PC. Now you are ready to power up the stream. When you power up the Stream, you will hear the power up beep followed by a message, "Victor Stream connected". Now it will act as another drive just like any device.

The Stream Folders

In order to place folders and files on the stream, the folders have to have a structured name so the stream can recognize the folders as talking books, music, other books,Etc.
the other books folder is for mp3 formatted books. These books are books you would find commercially encoded on CD. These are unstructured books.
The next folder is, $VRText. This folder is used for text files. Txt, html, etc. The last folder is $VRNotes used for recordings made on the stream. Remember the Stream creates folders on the card automatically when you first insert the card in to the stream.

Learning To Navigate Folders

The first time you use the stream you will need some files loaded on to the Stream so you can learn how to navigate files and folders

The cd that ships with the stream has a folder structure with files inside the folders. The folder on the cd is called: "Stream Tutorial Files". The files inside the folders are text, MP3, and daisy files for demo purposes. The files are placed there to help you understand how to navigate files using the stream's keyboard. You need to copy the files from the folders from the cd to the SD card, to create the structure on the card so the stream will recognize the files.

1. Navigate to the Stream_Tutorial_Files folder on the Stream's cd. When you have found it press the enter key. You will see a list of folders called: $VRDTB, $VRMusic, $VRNotes, $VROtherBooks, and $VRText

2. Using standard selection of text, select all of the files in each folder mentioned above, except the $VRNotes folder. The notes folder has already been created on the stream.

3. Make sure the Stream is connected to the Pc. Log on to it as you would any other drive. You should see all the folders on the card. Paste the files in each folder mentioned above. You will be pasting the files on the SD card.

4. Now it's safe to disconnect the Stream from the PC. It is recommended to remove the Stream from your system tray from safely remove hardware. This will insure none of your files or the SD card's allocation tables are corrupted. If you have other SD cards for the stream, remember, the folders will be automatically created on the card when you insert it in to the stream. How ever you won't need the demonstration files that are in the folders that ship with the stream's CD. They would take up space on the card. By the time you are using another card on the stream, you should have a working knowledge of how to navigate files and folders.
